traditional medicine & collaboration with Hedgewitch Holistics
With the heart as a symbol of Valentine's Day, it seems a fitting time to announce our first collaboration with Hedgwitch Holistics: Unbreak My Heart.
A companion set which includes a tonic and an anointing oil for supporting your heart physically and metaphorically. Unbreak My Heart is a bit East / West, borrowing medical traditions from Europe and Vedic traditions of SE Asia.
Hawthorn berries are a medicine for treating the physical heart: boosting efficiency and lowering blood pressure. Used also, as an internal 'balm' to soothe the aches of a 'broken heart'.
The tonic is made of foraged hawthorn berries, gifted lemon balm, and hibiscus flowers. Taken in small dosses right from the dropper throughout the day, or dossed into sparkling water, the tincture supports the functions of the heart and is mildly sedative.
Paired with an anointing oil of sunflower oil infused with Hawthorn berries and fortified with essential oils to mend and maintain your Heart Chakra. In Ayurvedic medicine sunflower oil is balancing for heat: worry, anxiety anger, frustration - - and the combination of essential oils in Unbreak My Heart are uplifting and root the energies to the earth.
The two blends compliment each other in an East / West tradition which encourages all the senses and rely on natural elements to protect and heal. Unbreak My Heart protects and heals the heart physically and symbolically.
east: breath & touch
One can easily imagine several rituals with both the tincture and the oils: a couple drops of Unbreak My Heart tincture before yoga or meditaion, and a few drops of the oil massaged over the heart chakra. A bath with the oils in the water, and massaged into the skin -followed by a cup of herbal tea with a few drops of tincture...
or massage a few drops into the palms, close the eyes, inhale while attending to the beat of your heart. Apply a few drops to the soles of the feet, or massage directly into the skin over the heart, the crown of the head.
Anahata. Anahata (Sanskrit: अनाहत, IAST: Anāhata, English: "unstruck") or heart chakra is the fourth primary chakra, according to Hindu Yogic, Shakta and Buddhist Tantric traditions. In Sanskrit, anahata means "unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten".
west: plant medicine - Hawthorn
The many varieties of hawthorn shrubs have been used by herbalists and early medical practitioners in England, Latvia and Scandanavia for a couple hundred years to treat a variety of heart-based complaints (even mild arythmias). Modern clinical research has demonstrated Hawthorn's ability to sustain the heart, making it more efficient, improving the heart’s own blood supply, lowering blood pressure (survey of medical literature).
Hedgewitch Holistics offers a modern-day, urban spin on the hedgewitch tradition. I strive to help my community heal, prevent, maintain and thrive through natural, holistic nutrition therapy that may include elements of folk medicine, herbalism, Wise Woman traditions, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and more.
